The green roof top under construction at Lund's Market in the heart of downtown Minneapolis is an example of the adaptive reuse of urban architecture and the potential for stormwater filtration among impervious surfaces found in the city. A deck made of recycled plastic will provide rooftop outdoor seating for café customers.
Designed by The Kestrel Design Group, the green roof design functionally ties the green roof deck into the vegetation and also highlights the positive impact of the green roof on the nearby Mississippi River as follows: • Vegetation outline emulates wave pattern, emulating the waves of the Mississippi River, Minnesota’s lakes, and the Midwestern prairie, which often reminded the first settlers of the waves of the ocean • Dramatic, bold pattern is designed to be discernible (attract attention) from windows overlooking the green roof café deck from several adjacent buildings • Wave crest pattern is used to make variety of spaces and tie vegetation into deck spaces • Roof design wave pattern provides a visual tie to positive impact of green roofs on health of water body into which runoff from the green roof flows (Mississippi River).

Mix of locally native prairie species and sedums
Stormwater benefits; increased roof lifespan; publicly accessible rooftop open space provides outdoor seating for cafe visible from surrounding downtown buildings.
