Green Roof Trailer Blog

Chris and Corrie built a mobile demonstration roof.

The trailer has a coat of paint (it needs another) and we took it on the road a few times over the last couple of weeks. Here it is at the Linden Hills Park "Good Energy Fair". People love to come up to the trailer and touch it. I even had one person who started pulling weeds until she ran into the prickly pears.

I highly recommend wearing leather gloves when installing cacti. Aside from the prickly pear cactus, we installed a range of sedums and native plants on the trailer. The list included Sedum Blue Spruce, Worm Grass, Stonecrop, Stone Orpine, Stonecrop Voodoo, Stonecrop Weihenstephaner Gold, Wild Chives, Prickly Pear, Bristly Prickly Pear, Prairie Smoke, Prairie Violet, Nodding Wild Onion, Silky Aster, Alumroot, Junegrass, Blue Grama, Side-oats Grama, and Grey Goldenrod.

We moved the trailer to Central Roofing to install the membrane and other green roof elements on our green roof demo trailer.

We used a peel-and-stick waterproofing membrane. We doubled the membrane at the corners and around our drainage scuppers.

Mounds Park Academy Research Roof Garden

High school senior Christine Hansen is demonstrating the benefits of a green roof as her high school plans a new cafeteria.

I am currently a senior at Mounds Park Academy and I am working on research roof garden to gather information about run-off water quantity vs. type of plant. I am in the process of building a small garden (12' by 3') 3' from the ground. It will be divided into four sections, one control, two with sedum mixtures, and one with native prairie species (still to be determined). Students will be responsible for collecting the data, allowing them to be introduced to new conservation techniques.

The trailer is part of our RoofBloom project, which is funded by the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District. Among other things, we are designing a green roof system appropriate for a shed or garage that can be constructed almost entirely from materials that can be purchased at a home improvement store and a garden center
